An earthquake shook a large area in the Midwest at 4:37 a.m. CT, at a very shallow depth of five kilometers according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Seismologists say the epicenter of this magnitude 5.2 temblor was in southern Illinois, about 66 miles from Evansville, Ind.
As of right now, there are no reports of serious injuries or damage.
"It shook our house where it woke me up," David Behm of Philo, 10 miles south of Champaign, said. "Windows were rattling, and you could hear it. The house was shaking inches. For people in central Illinois, this is a big deal. It's not like California."
Tremors were felt hundreds of miles away. We found reports from people who felt the quake in Kansas City, Chicago, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Madison, Wis., Des Moines and near Atlanta.
A radio talk show host in St Louis, Missouri, 206km west of the epicentre, told CNN he felt his home shake when the quake hit.
There were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries
Gary Patterson, a geologist at the University of Memphis, tells the Evansville Courier-Press that this is the first quake in that area since 1968. He explains why it was felt so far away: "Obviously, it depends on what the soil is where you're at, and what type of building you're in. A person jogging down the street in Kansas City didn't feel this, but a person in a 20-story building there would have felt it."

The Different Types Of Home Mortgage Loan

If you are considering buying a home, then you may be a little confused by
all of the terms you hear about home loans. After all, lenders just throw
around...
I felt it in my basement in Kansas City, KS. I have a loft bed that stands about 5' tall and it shook just enough to wake me up this morning.
ReplyDeleteInteresting nickname, thanks for adding to my blog.
ReplyDeleteI still remember my first "major" earthquake. It was the Seattle quake of about 7 or 8 years ago. There was no damage in Vancouver BC, but my whole office was shaking for what seemed like a few minutes but was only about 10 seconds.
Interesting addition, about a week ago, there was a warning issued about this quake happening. right around the same time the Pacific North West got a warning about a possible quake centering in the Juan De Fuca Straight. Really makes you stop and think.
