Chad Kroeger AKA Chad Turton of Nickleback sentenced in 2006 Drunk Driving conviction.

Nickelback's Chad Kroeger must pay a $600 fine and is prohibited from driving for one year for a 2006 drunk-driving offence, a judge said Thursday morning in Surrey, B.C., during a court appearance by the group's lead singer.

Kroeger, whose real name is Chad Turton, was pulled over for speeding in his Limited Edition Lamborghini Diablo in June 2006 with almost twice the legal alcohol limit in his system.

The 33-year-old wasn't in court when he was found guilty last month, but the judge ordered Kroeger to appear for sentencing.

After his conviction on April 1 in Surrey provincial court, Kroeger's lawyer, Marvin Stern, said his client planned to appeal the conviction. It is not known if that appeal will proceed.

Stern had argued that police violated his client's rights and wanted the breathalyzer results thrown out of court, but the judge ruled the results were admissible. In a blatantly stupid argument, Stern also comlpained about the sentencing stating it would be difficult for Chad to travel to Vancouver without being allowed to drive.

Nickelback's members are originally from Hanna, Alta., but moved to the Vancouver area in the 1990s to launch their careers.

The Juno Award-winning band has had a series of chart toppers, beginning in 2001 with How You Remind Me.
