17 Year Old Bristol Palin Pregnant

As the hype and excitement over John McCain's "risky" choice of unknown fellow maverick Sarah Palin as his running mate faded, the first female governor of Alaska will be subjected to fierce scrutiny of every aspect of her life.

Just three days after she vowed to "stand up to those who have corrupted Washington", Mrs Palin and her husband Todd were defending their five children from the intense media spotlight as Americans and the world get to know their family.

The couple announced their eldest daughter Bristol, 17, was about five months pregnant and intended to marry her boyfriend Levi.

The public statement was released to rebut "mud-slinging and lies" circulating on liberal US blog sites, McCain campaign officials said.

These rumours claimed Mrs Palin's fifth child, Trig, who was born with Down's syndrome in May, was actually her granddaughter and that she had faked her own pregnancy earlier this year to cover up for Bristol.

In a joint statement, Mrs Palin and her husband said: "We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us.

"Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned.

"We're proud of Bristol's decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support."

They went on: "Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realise very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family.

"We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi's privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates."
