The Northwest Florida chapter of the American Red Cross has joined with adjacent chapters in making preparations for the possible impact of what may become Hurricane Fay.
Even though the projected path is away from the Florida panhandle, volunteers and staff are taking the steps necessary to set up sheltering operations if conditions call for it. They are also ready to respond to other areas of Florida should the need arise.
Residents of Okaloosa and Walton counties in particular are urged to pay close attention to all announcements from the Red Cross and their local office of Emergency Management.
We know we cannot always prevent emergencies or disasters, but experience tells us we can respond better and recover faster from them if we are prepared. With more than half of this year's hurricane season remaining, the Red Cross also urges local residents to take this opportunity to make sure that personal preparations are complete.
Every household should have at least three days food and water for each person and pet, and those on prescription medications should ensure that they will have an adequate uninterrupted supply of their medications.
While there are no lines, make sure that your vehicle's gas tank in full and make sure that your disaster kit is fully stocked with batteries, flashlights, radio, manual can opener, cash, etc. If you are in a potential evacuation zone, call a relative out of state and make arrangements to visit with them if county officials call for an evacuation. Stay tuned to local media for important announcements.
